Accor's partnership with Energy Observer, the world’s first hydrogen-powered, zero-emission vessel, reflects our commitment to sustainable hospitality. The Group has also invested in Energy Observer’s development branch, EODev, to explore technologies that develop innovative energy solutions for the hotel of the future, aiming to reduce our carbon footprint.
Energy Observer: A Floating Laboratory

Since embarking on its journey in 2017 from Saint-Malo, France, and until the end of its global expedition around the world, that culminated in 2024, Energy Observer navigated 50 countries, marking 101 stopovers and covering over 68,000 nautical miles—three times the globe’s circumference. As a floating laboratory developed from a multi-award-winning catamaran, it stands as the world’s first hydrogen-powered, zero-emission vessel, entirely self-sufficient in energy. Commanded by a diverse crew of sailors, engineers, journalists, and scientists, the vessel explores and optimizes hydrogen, solar, wind, and hydraulic energies. Its mission transcends innovation; it aims to raise awareness of ecological transition issues while proving that a sustainable energy future is within reach for all.
A Partnership that Reflects Our Ambition for a Sustainable Future for Hospitality
Accor’s partnership with Energy Observer exemplifies our pioneering spirit and long-standing commitment to redefining sustainable hospitality. Since 2015, we have embarked on a collective adventure alongside this groundbreaking initiative to develop the world’s first autonomous zero-emission ship powered by renewable energy and hydrogen. This vessel plays a crucial role in innovating solutions for energy transition, including the RexH2 generator, the sailing technology used for our America’s Cup Orient Express-sponsored boat and part of the Orient Express Silenseas technology.
In 2019, we deepened our commitment by investing in Energy Observer’s development branch, EODev, to design groundbreaking innovations for the maritime sector as well as cost-efficient energy solutions tailored for our hotels, and aiming to reduce their carbon emissions. By engaging in this collaboration, we aim not only to reduce the impact of our operations on the environment and local communities, but also to foster a culture of innovation within the industry, our partnership with Energy Observer serving as a catalyst for accelerating the energy transition in hospitality, paving the way for a sustainable future for hospitality.
