Local Cultures, Vibrant Colors: An Inclusive Design Vision for Novotel Goa Panjim

May 28, 2026

Novotel Goa Panjim, India reimagines the city’s vibrant cultural heritage through contemporary design. Local materials, colors, and textures blend into welcoming, social spaces that reflect Goa’s lively, community-driven spirit.

A Fresh Interpretation of Goa’s Iconic Aesthetic

Designing the Novotel Goa Panjim required a keen eye and cultural sensibility to authentically reflect the city’s character. Architect Abhishek Mathur of Studio HBA drew inspiration from across Goa, particularly the historic Fontainhas district ౼ celebrated for its bold colors, rich textures and blend of Indian courtyards with Portuguese facade symmetry.

In shaping the common spaces and rooms, Studio HBA captured this spirit through bright blue and green patterned tiles painted by local artisans, alongside textiles and artwork. References to neighborhood beaches, skies and birds, introduce poetic and unexpected moments ౼ forever connecting the hotel with Goa’s cultural energy.

Designing for Connection and Community

Another major source of inspiration is the community spirit of Fontainhas. “I love how the community is brought to life with colors, vibrant conversations, and chic corners,” says Mathur. “It reminded me to be more inclusive and bring that local spirit into the design process.”

Developed in close dialogue with Accor’s design team, this sense of openness became central to the concept. It is most evident in the lobby, where a fluid spatial layout guides guests through a sequence of spaces designed for interaction. From the lobby to the Gourmet Bar ౼ an activator of social interaction ౼ and on to the Food Exchange dining space, the hotel is a true social hub, connecting seamlessly and authentically with the surrounding neighborhood.

The guest rooms extend this approach, combining bold yet soothing colors that welcome guests with a feeling of freshness and calm. Here, furniture, lighting, materials, and artwork layer together to create dynamic and engaging spaces with unexpected visual surprises scattered throughout.

Sustainability at the Core of Design

Set within a dense urban landscape, the hotel’s living facade stands out as a distinctive calling card ౼ an expression of the central role sustainability played in its design. This lush greenery continues indoors, where carefully placed light wells illuminate and nourish the lobby’s plant life with natural daylight.

Throughout the hotel, curated spaces champion regional craftsmanship while reducing transport impact by prioritizing locally sourced and inspired materials, such as upcycled timber benches. From eco-certified selections to responsible construction practices, environmental considerations guided every design decision.

The interior concept is rooted in one of Novotel's four brand design frameworks, originally conceived by the Sundukovy Sisters. Studio HBA thoughtfully adapted it to the Novotel Goa Panjim context, weaving in local culture, materials and identity to create a space that feels both globally coherent and deeply rooted in its destination.
