A New Design Benchmark for Luxury Hospitality in India
February 05, 2026
In a city celebrated for its grandeur and thriving luxury market, with Fairmont Mumbai, Accor and the owners set out to create not just a destination, but an experiential landmark and definitive social epicenter. The owners’ ambition was uncompromising: to go beyond a luxury hotel and create a destination for celebrations, extraordinary events, and unforgettable moments. Conceived as much more than a hotel, Fairmont Mumbai stands as a testament to the pursuit of operational excellence and transformative guest experiences. From the earliest stages, every touchpoint — from design and service to sustainability — was intentionally crafted to set a new standard for luxury hospitality in India. Learn more about how Accor, Fairmont Mumbai and its owner Mr. Nitan Chhatwal partnered to create an icon and bring operational excellence and extraordinary experiences to life – watch the video above.

From the outset, the owners had one clear ambition: to create a destination where every moment feels extraordinary. More than a hotel, Fairmont Mumbai was designed as a place for landmark celebrations and memorable experiences. Brought to life with the support of Accor’s hotel design expertise, and true to Fairmont’s promise to ‘Make Special Happen,’ it has become a new reference for excellence, redefining luxury hospitality in India.

Transforming this vision into reality required overcoming major obstacles: a tight post-pandemic timeline, design complexity, stakeholder alignment, and the drive to embed sustainability from day one.
Accor’s global design and technical teams worked hand-in-hand with the owner and the Fairmont Mumbai team. From navigating the construction pause due to COVID-19, to managing technical and architectural challenges unique to Mumbai’s climate, every step was defined by a shared “excellence mindset.”
The collaboration resulted in distinctive achievements, including sustainable food sourcing, chemical-free water treatment, and India’s first luxury longevity suite “Blue Xone,” offering wellness experiences on a dedicated floor.
Our design ambition was to define the new era of luxury for Mumbai. Inspired by the Art Deco golden age of 1920s New York, every choice – down to the last detail – was made to ignite wonder and create flexible, sustainable spaces. Operational excellence is made visible when design and service work seamlessly to elevate every guest and every owner objective.

Accor’s ambition is to create inspiring hotels that anticipate guests’ expectations and foster genuine connection – of which Fairmont Mumbai is an excellent example. Great design honors heritage, champions wellness and sustainability, and continues to evolve after opening to ensure every moment feels special.

A Strategic Vision for India
With three Fairmont properties recently opened in the country, and more on the horizon, Fairmont Mumbai is helping shape the future of Indian luxury hospitality. Guided by Fairmont’s Make Special Happen brand credo, the hotel is a celebration of Fairmont’s unique approach to hospitality, creating a true sense of belonging and meaningful moments at every guest touchpoint.
With over 70 hotels currently in operation in India and an ambition to reach 300 properties by 2030, Accor is investing in scale, innovation, and partnerships that elevate guest experiences across the country. In April 2025, this commitment deepened through a strengthened partnership with InterGlobe Enterprises, creating a unified “hospitality powerhouse” to accelerate development, fueling innovation, scalability, and the delivery of exceptional guest experiences.
