Pioneering Water Self-Sufficiency at Raffles Bali

July 11, 2025

A luxury resort where 97% of water used returns to the land – it’s a remarkable achievement that exemplifies Accor's advanced approach to water stewardship and our commitment to reducing our water footprint.

With 70% of Accor hotels located in areas facing water supply risks*, efficient water management isn't just an environmental imperative – it's essential for resilient operations. Our Group Water Policy commits to operating within planetary boundaries by 2030. That requires transforming current hotels and designing new hotels with water supply and management in mind from the outset, and close collaboration with hotel owners and local communities along with our full value chain to reduce collective and local impact.

At Raffles Bali, a 32-villa luxury resort welcoming 15,000 guests annually, responsible water management was embedded into every aspect of the eco-design from day one. The passionate, committed team continues to build on this strong foundation, constantly seeking new ways to minimize their water footprint and maximize resource efficiency.

Discover How Raffles Bali Leads by Example in Water Stewardship

The resort's ingenious dual-source water management system represents best-in-class engineering. Water drawn from a deep well is filtered and treated onsite, with 70% refined to exceptional standards for use in resort villas and restaurants. The remaining 30% joins treated wastewater in a recycling system that meets 90% of the 23-hectare property’s irrigation needs, dramatically reducing demand on local water resources. The result is extraordinary efficiency: just 3% is lost to evaporation, with 97% returning to the land.

Sustainability is not an initiative – it is embedded in every decision we make. As part of the Accor group, we are committed to operating within planetary boundaries, and water preservation plays a vital role in that promise. Our water management system reflects our dedication to responsible hospitality – integrating innovation with care for the environment and local community. By managing this precious resource wisely, we honor our responsibility to both nature and future generations.

General Manager, Raffles Bali

For the Raffles Bali team, sustainability represents a fundamental mindset and source of collective pride. By engaging both guests and the local community in their sustainability journey, sharing knowledge about innovative approaches, and demonstrating practical environmental stewardship, the team creates positive ripple effects that extend far beyond the resort.

An All-Encompassing Approach to Sustainable Operations

The resort's environmental commitment extends well beyond water management. Integrated eco-design principles include energy-efficient heat pumps, comprehensive LED lighting, and motion sensors that optimize consumption. Teams across the resort champion sustainable initiatives: from collaborating with a local waste provider to transform organic waste into compost for the resort grounds and kitchen garden, to prioritizing locally sourced products for resort kitchens.

The comprehensive approach to environmental responsibility at Raffles Bali earned Green Globe accreditation in 2024. This recognition demonstrates how integrating innovative design, operational excellence, and community engagement – accelerates progress toward our impact-reduction targets while establishing new benchmarks for responsible luxury hospitality worldwide.
