Reviving a Landmark

The design vision that infused Mövenpick Hotel Jakarta City Centre with local heritage.

June 02, 2026

The Mövenpick Hotel Jakarta City Centre, Indonesia, has undergone a transformation into a vibrant, market-inspired social destination rooted in Indonesian heritage. The redesign was led by designer and architect Budiman Hendropurnomo of DCM Jakarta Studio, appointed by the property owner.

Drawing on local craftsmanship, wood artefacts, and cultural traditions, the design team of DCM Jakarta Studio reimagined the existing building as an immersive, authentic hospitality experience.

Reinterpreting Indonesian Heritage to Create a Unique Spatial Experience

As Budiman Hendropurnomo open the double wooden doors, he invites us into Deya Studio, an art creation workshop that helped shape the design vision for the Mövenpick Hotel Jakarta City Centre. Here, traditional elements are reinterpreted through contemporary expression – revealing the creative foundation behind the project’s identity.

Developed through an ongoing exchange with Accor’s Design & Technicals Services team, the concept to transform the existing building into a signature Mövenpick property was guided by one central ambition: to weave ancient Indonesian culture into the brand’s contemporary and distinctive identity. Batik-inspired patterns and artisanal wood craftsmanship introduce subtle artistic layers that go beyond modern architecture, embedding the emotional and material richness of Indonesian heritage into the spatial experience.

A Market-Inspired Space Rooted in Jakarta’s Urban Energy

One of the hotel’s most striking design features is the entrance canopy ౼ which extends to the edge of the street to connect the hotel to Jakarta’s vibrant urban energy. Arriving at ground level, guests are guided up the escalator or lifts to the market-inspired lobby, where the design strikes a perfect balance between openness and intimacy.

Double-height spaces framed by curved iron walkways flow into more intimate single-story areas; while a glass-covered courtyard draws natural light onto the symbolic “Tree of Life.” Cozy seating alcoves carved into marble walls and private dining spaces create moments of retreat within the lively social setting. Designed as a flexible marketplace for working, dining and gathering, the lobby reinforces the hotel’s welcoming spirit.

Throughout, the interiors celebrate local craftsmanship and create an intriguing spatial composition through rich layering ౼ from the carved timber reception backdrop to geometric ceiling boxes in the ballroom, and suspended lighting elements adding depth in the lobby.

Designing for Climate, Comfort and Cultural Connection

Sustainability stands at the heart of the Mövenpick Hotel Jakarta City Centre's transformation, with responsible practices fully integrated into the architectural strategy – guiding every design decision. Rooftop solar panels power the hotel’s emergency systems while contributing to overall operational efficiency. On the east and west façades, bamboo-inspired screens offer a nod to local weaving traditions while lowering interior temperatures and improving guest comfort. Locally sourced materials and reclaimed timber further reinforce this approach, creating spaces that are environmentally conscious while remaining deeply connected to local culture and identity.

Nature also plays an active role in the hotel experience. The airy courtyard enhances natural ventilation and draws daylight deep into the interiors, while lush rooftop greenery creates a cooling microclimate within the dense urban setting.

We want to bring not just a modern space that is distinctive through buildings or interiors, but we also want to bring the culture, the ancient culture, into the space.
